The First Weekend of Deer Hunting

November 21st through 23rd, 2008

Lake Lucerne
We left work before noon on Friday to try to get to the lake while the sun was still up. At 4:30 PM in June you can ski, swim, dive, and get in a round of golf before sunset. On November 21st we had time to unpack. It also started to get colder.
Lake Lucerne
Hoar Frost! Saturday morning was bright and covered with hoar frost.
Lake Lucerne
It was on the pines...
Lake Lucerne
It covered the pumpkins...
Lake Lucerne
Weeds...
Lake Lucerne
and webs.
Lake Lucerne
Some of the frost creating steam was still about, but fading fast.
Lake Lucerne
No frost was observed on Lake Metonga. There were a few patches of open water, but it was frozen over for the most part.
Lake Lucerne
As you may or may not have heard, Mallard's on Metonga has closed. We were quite distressed at this news. I loved their food and the view. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to relocate it to lake Lucerne. After asking around in town, a lady at the hardware store (you just can't get a better source than that) told us it was a "retirement thing" and Mallard's would re-open under new management in December. Yeah!
Lake Lucerne
Coming back from town, we stopped at the vacant lot that was once the Lake Lucerne Resort. The south end of the lake has much more ice than the north end.
Lake Lucerne
As the "burning the big old stump" fire ate away at the big old stump, thirsty hunters creeped from the woods demanding libations and entertainment.
Lake Lucerne
Cool blue lights were added the previous night to the underside of the bar. The hunters seemed largely unimpressed by the loungy glow. The night started innocently enough with many banana daiquiris. Then came the beer. Then came a bizarre Wild Turkey taste test (Wild Turkey tastes of death). Then some miscreant found the dice cup. Then, regrettably, came the tequila. The cheap tequila Then came the end.
Lake Lucerne
We'll be back in as few as 1 week and as many as 3 weeks. There will be no drinking of tequila and I hid the dice cup.
