The lake last week saw very average weather with highs in the 30s°F and lows in the teens (°F). There's no ice on Lucerne yet, but with all the cold mornings, it'll come soon. If the forecasts are accurate, it will also come fast. In the extreme southwestern corner of the lake, the week started with the end of the Knottlane Board Meeting, Shareholder Conference, and Pool Party. Big tubs of buffet bacon, I'll miss you most of all. The journey back to the bar started in a dark, but well lit corner of the lake. Brule is open and so are some of the hills in the lumpier parts between the well lit corner and Lucerne. Late in the week, it looked like we finally had a bit of ice on the north shore. A closer look showed the "ice" was just foam. Soon, too soon, this fake ice will be replaced by the real thing. The lake was calm and ice-free all weekend. There were also some birds. The great gathering of water fowl is one of the last open water events of the year. Local authorities tarred all the cracks on West Shore Drive in another late open water/autumn event. We missed the actual event, but did tromp over the thick, black, pothole preventing aftermath. Despite the flatness of the weekend, no one water skied. There was some downhill stuff however on 2 or 3 runs at Ski Brule. There's no ice on Lucerne yet. The forecasts call for highs in the teens and single digit lows (°F) before the end of the gun deer season. Snow, too.
