Lighter Rain, Heavier Mosquitoes

Last week started off with copious amounts of Canadian carbon filling the air. This is the second year in a row that our northern neighbors have filled our sky with the smell of campfires tainted by a hint of burning moose. We were not amused.

We were amazed at how fast the smoke rolled in. Just about 12 hours earlier, visibility was great and the air smelled of spring.

Last week, in addition to peak smoke (hopefully), the northwoods were also at peak trillium.

Other bloom types were achieving high density, too.

By the weekend, there were swarms of hummingbirds on the feeders. These guys were enjoyed much more than the swarms of mosquitoes that pestilence-ised the area last week.

Local squirrels are getting more active and beggy, too.

Saturday's bar night was lightly attended, ended early, and featured the Sidecar. This drink has been described as an "old-timey classic, enchanting cocktail of brandy, lemon juice, and orange liqueur". We liked the lemon-y sugared rim on the glass, but the drink was just okay at best. We'll work on it for the summer.

There were also Bugles and instructions given to younglings on how to properly eat them.

At the start of bar night, there was some thunder and lightning. The weather ended before the last drink was garnished.

Both rain events last week didn't have much accumulation.

The NCC golf course is in fine shape though the tees are showing some signs of wear.

The first aquaplane-ers of 2024 were spotted last weekend. The kneeboarder looked to be having a good time. There was not much screaming.

Summer was close enough to feel last week. There was sun. There was thunder. There was warmth. There was bugs. Biting bugs. Lots and lots of biting bugs. We are huge fans of the former. Not so much of the latter. As long as the DEET holds out, it's shaping up to be a legendary summer. Last week's meager amounts of rain along with continued watershed action from previous storms is keeping the lake level up.
