Plants-A-Poppin'

May 6th through 12th, 2024

Lake Lucerne
The sky started off blue(-ish) last week. Then the clouds rolled in. Then some rain. Through it all, low tempertures were above freezing and highs allowed golfing without a hoodie. Despite a shortage of blue sky, this has been one of the best Mays ever!
Lake Lucerne
Several of the days had rough water from morning through late afternoon, but most had flat, super ski-able water in the evening.
Lake Lucerne
There are not many fishing boats on Lucerne yet. Despite this, some fished the north end hard all week.
Lake Lucerne
Others tried their luck on local bird feeders.
Lake Lucerne
Lucerne had some rain. The lake level was upped by over a half an inch during the week and then another tenth of an inch on the weekend.

During the first round of rain, we moved some images from our desktop abacus to the bar's server. I was amused that the unit of time estimated to complete the operation was "About 1 Day" instead of hours. I wonder if the operating system programmers used weeks, months, or years. Or decades, centuries, or millenniums. I would dread the day, but be somewhat amused at the same time, to see "About X Eons remaining" in the current operation. I'd take a long lunch that day and finish it with a toast to the monkey that coded that.
Lake Lucerne
The warmer (for May) weather has made the plants happy. The trillium are popping up.
Lake Lucerne
They're just about everywhere.

Other bits of color were spotted on the forest floor.
Lake Lucerne
By the end of the week, the trout lilies were in full yellow.
Lake Lucerne
And the ferns are starting. I've been told you can eat 'em. I've never been that hungry.
Lake Lucerne
At the start of the week, tree leaves were uncommon. At the end of the week, any tree that remained un-leafed could be tagged as near future firewood.
Lake Lucerne
The NCC golf course is open and the rain has made the water hazards extra perilous.
Lake Lucerne
In early May, conditions on the links can be unsettling, but this year even the back 9 is in good shape.
Lake Lucerne
There were not many campfires around the lake last week. The few spotted were of unusual size due to spring clean up activity.
Lake Lucerne
It's not swimmable yet, but the lake was notably warmer by the weekend.
Lake Lucerne
We had some weather as the week closed. There was not much rain, but plenty of lightning.
Lake Lucerne
Some was the boring cloud to cloud type.
Lake Lucerne
But there were some good ground strikes that kept the wise from golfing.
Lake Lucerne
Sunday's rain moved on before sunset.

The hills are green. Many piers and lifts are in, and Memorial Day Weekend is visible on the calendarian horizon. Peak anticipation of Summer 2024 is here. Now is the best time to go over a few rules to maximize summer fun. Stretch before running. Keep ample supplies of ibuprofen, Benadryl, and Bactine on hand. Try not to die. And most important of all, remember to use a non-conducting umbrella and water resistant camera to image storms

-Nemo's on the course or courts, unless there's lightning to be photographed.
