Start of Autumn Weekend

Next »

September 20th through 23rd, 2007

Thursday evening started out OK, but the clouds thickened and storms rolled in after mid-night. There was more than a bit of lightning and about an inch of rain. Friday was hot and thick. The rain came at around 5:30 PM and continued for a few hours. The cold front pushed through by Saturday. After a cold morning, the temperature rose to near 70°F. The sky was blue all day. Peak color is a subjective thing. Many told me that they feel that this weekend was peak. Some argued that peak was still a few days away. Peak or not, the colors were fantastic. It has been awhile since the northwoods have exploded with such a spectacular display. The lake was unusually clear, even for Lucerne. I spent a little time on the bottom of the 69°F degree water. The rockbass are on the shallow cribs and they are big. I'd say about a pound or better. Many small perch are around with a few bass. Didn't see any walleye. Despite a load of rain, the lake remains very low. It's about 22 inches below the nail. A wind from the south picked up on Sunday and waves crashed against rocks on the north shore. I'll be back with a post-peak report next week.

-Nemo
