Krispa Weekend

April 1st through 3rd, 2005

Lake Lucerne
By late Friday afternoon, the ice had started to pull away from parts of the shore. The water was deemed cold, no one swam.
Lake Lucerne
Efforts to get the webcam up produced limited success despite an international coallition. We'll try again soon after I stop shaking with rage over the quality of off-shore help desks.
Lake Lucerne
The sun coming up over the east shore on Saturday was intense/hot.
Lake Lucerne
The clear cold night refroze areas of the lake that were open just hours earlier. The thin ice was gone after a few hours in the sun.
Lake Lucerne
Anything dark on the ice, like this oak leaf, heats up in the sun and "burns" a pit in the ice
Lake Lucerne
A lost bottle rocket stick burns more of a line than a pit.
Lake Lucerne
Some of the surface ice is starting to "rot" in the sun. The honeycombed veneer is made of closely packed ice sticks that crunch when walked on.
Lake Lucerne
In just a few weeks "the nail" will be returned to the lake and the first lake level measurement will follow.
Lake Lucerne
Streams of water in the woods around the lake are starting to grow. The area is noisy with the sound of flowing water.
Lake Lucerne
The sap is really flowing now. 255 gallons was collected on Saturday.
Lake Lucerne
Sap was cooked down to syrup all weekend. Mr EMT claims that 10 gallons of water is boiled off per hour with his current setup.
Lake Lucerne
Sunday's morning was evey bit as clear as Saturday's, only warmer.
Lake Lucerne
Golf was enjoyed/endured on the 17 inch thick ice. This could be the last time this spring that golf is possible on the lake without scuba tanks.
Lake Lucerne
Just as the temperature rose above 50°F on it's way to the low 60's°F, we had to leave.
Lake Lucerne
In 12 days the Forest County Maple Syrup Festival is held. We'll be there.
