More Color, First Frost

September 14th through 20th, 2020

The lake area turned a seasonal corner last week. Skiers and swimmers had been suffering with cooler temperatures since Labor Day, but last week those temperatures dropped close to November. Along with the cold came some color in the trees and a falling lake level. Frost covered lawns on two consecutive days. It wasn't a hard freeze in that a few annuals managed to survive. The ridge to the East is showing small patches of color. To the West, between Lakes Lucerne and Metonga, there seems to be more trees changing.. Viewed from the ground, the colors are getting quite spectacular. We should see peak color in about a week or so. The reds seemed to be leaking into many of the frosty sunsets. It took a little time, some circuit diagrams, and a multi meter, but another game was brought back to life and added to the bar's collection. Over a half dozen other 80's classic coin-ops are coming. The outbuilding to house the overflow is almost done. Once finished and powered up, the first post 'rona opening will be less of traditional Planets Bar night and more like a John Hughes movie. The eagles seemed to always be overhead. In the evening, the loons give an audio alarm when it's time to point your camera up. Sometimes they're not flying. On more then one occasion we've caught them resting high in the white pines on the North end of the lake. Technically, according to astronomers, it's still Summer for a few more days. In reality, it's Fall. There's still time to get in that last ski run, but be prepared. The lake temperature has dropped to 60°F. That's cold. Cold enough to keep the amateurs and sane people from grabbing the business end of a tow rope. Even for the less sane, the siren song of a flat, tuber-less lake gets a little off key when Lucerne's temperature drops into the 50s°F. That being said, Winter Ski Rules are in effect. No one will point and laugh if you're wearing a hat while skiing past a dock full of people.

-Nemo: No on the 'rona, waiting for results on the Pac-Man fever.
