The Last March Weekend

Next »

March 26th through 28th, 2010

On Friday, the last day we saw the sun, the lake ice was in retreat. It's clear that the ice is not long for this earth. Much of Saturday on the north end of the lake was spent bringing sap down to syrup, filtering the result, and bottling the golden goodness. Twenty plus gallons were cooling by 2:00 PM. The Nicolet Country Club opened its greens on Friday. Golf! In March! Unless you have a snow wedge, beware the hazard behind the 7th green. The back 9 was still closed. The Bailey's Comet was sighted/consumed during Saturday's bar night. On Sunday, the ice was to be checked. It's still there. Nobody wanted to push their luck and try to get out onto the sheet to check the thickness. I'd guess it's about 5+ inches. Wabikon was largely ice free on Sunday. Historically Lake Lucerne goes out a week or two after that. Unless the cold makes a huge comeback (it could happen, it's early April) expect the lake to be ice free around next weekend.

-Nemo
