End of Tapping Weekend

April 17th through 19th, 2009

Lake Lucerne
On Friday, a flock of geese took a break on the north end of the lake. The best thing was the way they waddled back into formation before they took off (strange but true!)

Saturday marked the end of tree squeezing season. Spiles were pulled...

Buckets were collected...

and washed...

The last sap of the season was added to the cookers...

and the last batch was brought down to syrup and canned. It was a very good year for maple syrup.
Lake Lucerne
It started raining late Saturday night after a bar night that featured the safety of friends and pool, not the perils of cigars, dice, and absinthe. Well, there was a bit of peril. The precipitation has since changed state, but has yet to end.
Lake Lucerne
The webcam was checked to be sure that all can watch ice-out. If the lake gets the 20 inches or so of snow now predicted, ice-out could be pushed back a few days and the lake level pushed up a few inches.
Lake Lucerne
Rain or snow is predicted almost everyday for the next 10 days. In 2003-2004 we gained 20+ inches of lake level with just such a spring. It's time to wave bye to the 5 year old drought and welcome a new, more cloudy, moister era.
