Cooler Days and Rainy Nights.

Last week started off summery. That didn't last. After Monday, the area got some wind, passing rain, and a few mornings in the 30s°F. And a colder Lake Lucerne. Swimming, diving, and skiing from here on out will become an activity for the hardy and summer clingingly desperate. Critters across the northwoods were active last week. The furry balls of evil, commonly referred to as squirrels, were boldly raiding bird feeders, making weird sounds, and planning other heists all week. About half the hummingbirds have moved to warmer climes. The remaining ones are draining sugar water at an impressive rate. Eagles were fishing up the north end of Lucerne most days. Tiny turtles, well...one tiny turtle, was slowly poking around the local golf course. Not having a ruler handy, Mrs. Nemo used a penny to invite attention to its smallness. Late season flowers are splashing color across the landscape. There are a few bees, too. A few trees were in their October glory. Most trees were still in their summer leafery. The predominant color in the forest remains a very July-ish green. It rained early in the week. On Thursday evening, the sky showed signs of another wet night. By Friday morning, the lake was just over half an inch deeper. Despite the rain, creeks and other inflows remain dry. Most of the rain came after the sun set. A little held off until we were heading for the tees on five. Except for the occasional passing sunshower, golf last week was good. The course is in good shape and the rain didn't last long nor was very heavy. The cooler weather was not unexpected, but not particularly welcome this early in the month. The cold did have the silver lining of ridding the woods of many mosquitoes. If the cooler weather worked like that on squirrels, we'd be all for it. The lake's temperature was down to 65°F late in the week. Best to get those last ski runs in sooner rather than later.<br><br><br>-Nemo is missing nights in the 60s°F, days in the 70s°F, and Lucerne near 80°F.
