The Week Finishing With Footstock

August 11th through 17th, 2025

It rained at the start and near the finish of last week. Except for one day, the highs were in the upper 70s°F in between the wet. The rain at the end of the week was unfortunate in that it coincided with day one of Footstock. The second rain event, the one that soaked day one of Footstock, was twice as wet as the one at the start of the week. The first few sunsets of last week had just a hit of smoke. By the weekend, it was all gone. Some celebrated by pulling footers in the rain. After the smoke, late season tiger lilies continue to splash color around the northwoods. Hummingbirds are going nuts. They're emptying the bar's feeders twice a day. Mrs. Nemo has started her falconry hobby smally. If she can train them to get mosquitoes, I'll join her. The local golf course continues to be in good shape. The Knott Lane Open is less than 2 weeks away! The highs were low enough to not really need to escape them, but spending time under the lake was still enjoyable. Wednesday evening the largest crowd of the year saw the last ski show of the season on Lucerne. The show was objectively the best one of 2025. The big event of last week came on the weekend. Day zero of Footstock '25 enjoyed a warm sunny day and a new dock. Day one just enjoyed the new dock. Day zero (Friday) saw many setting up viewing/convalescence canopies and a few getting a feel for this year's eight. At end of day zero, the first Footstock Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony was heavily attended at the Mole Lake Casino, Lodge & Event Center. It rained on Saturday. When it wasn't thundering or lightning, the event went on. Pruney fingers became a thing among boat drivers and judges. The sea plane tucked into a corner near the boat landing was a new thing this year. On Saturday, it only slipped its moorings once. There was no rain on Sunday. Yay! The wind was light making Peshtigo Lake glassy except for the boat made rollers in the middle of the eight. Many full eights were completed. Most of the time it was easy to pick the winner of a run. Sometimes a surprise wave (Surprise!) would result in a tie. The victims were gathered up and put back in que for a re-run. A special shout out to all the volunteers that setup before and gathered victims, skis, and float planes during the event. Your efforts did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. After the footing event, clouds started to move into the area. We're not sure what critter leaves the slimy egg thingy on the water thermometer's cord this time of year, but it's colorful and we've grown used to it. The lake temperature is currently 76°F. The neighbor's husky little feline seems to be keeping the north end's mouse population in check. Everyone is extremely happy with this event with the possible exception of the mice or more accurately the late mice. Large patches of burdock is coming in nicely along Lake Lucerne Drive. It was noted later in the week that some of the bar's corn has inexplicably flowered. It looks like getting boats off lifts will not be a problem this fall due to a falling lake level. With all the rain, Lucerne's level should be about equal to or above what it was during ice-out by the time to pull the water stuff. The results of the world's largest barefoot tournament are all over the internet, so I won't bore you with a long litany of names. The entire event was pulled off without the loss of a footer, prop, or float plane. Only one boat motor exploded and that was after eight complete figure eights at the end of the competition (RIP the yellow boat's motor, may it rest in pieces). With all the action packed into last week, knottlane's code monkey has gotten behind (bad monkey!) editing and posting ski show and Footstock pictures and video. With no more water show events for the next few weeks, catching up will go fast.<br><br><br>-Nemo un-pruned hours before sunset.
