Flowers, Fairs, Deer, and Smoke

July 28th through August 3rd, 2025

Last week started off hot with highs in the 80s°F. By the weekend, the highs were in the 70s°F and lows in the 40s°F. The 70s°F are nice. The 40s°F are way too cold for early August. We got a little rain late Monday. Very little. Lucerne lost 2 inches during July. Before the "rain" Monday night, there was a ski show. There was another show on Wednesday. Both were pretty good. Sky raccoons continue to slime up lawns on the north end. We are hoping they head south sooner rather than later. For a week or two, hummingbirds were scarce. Then they came back. They are emptying the bar's two feeders so fast we put out a third. They emptied that one, too. With the cooler air came Canadian smoke. The lake area got its share of lung irritating particulates and reduced visibility, but we also had some good sunsets. Thanks, Canada. Plants don't seem to mind the smoke. The sides of Knott Lane are super colorful. The milkweed pod crop along Potawatomi Trail (prounounced "Highway 8" until Highway 8 comes back online) is showing promise. The NCC course is still in good shape. With the recent lack of rain, the water hazards are a little lower. The course's deer are fearless and frisky. They can also make putting more interesting. The extended weekend held the Oneida County Fair. It was 4 days of games, farm stuff, and giant hodags. There were also rides. And tasty, if not very healthy, food. On Saturday the LLAA held its annual "Fun Day". It was well attended and filled with food and auctions. A few hours after the LLAA event, Crandon Water Shows presented its annual alumni show. The event was fun and very entertaining. The lake gave up its heat during last week's celebrated cold mornings (41°F on Saturday Morning, ick!). By Sunday, the lake temperture was 74°F. We prefer Monday's 78°F, but we'll take it. The smoke is forecast to move on soon. Huzzah! Many summer events have also moved on, but there are many more to come. Two more ski shows, Footstock, another milfoil picking or two, and the Knott Lane Open golf outing to name but a few. In between these event logs, we'll be packing the oakum of skiing, swimming, diving, golf, tennis, campfires, and other bits of summer. Our motto for August: Keep the injuries superficial and the energy drinks cold.

-Nemo awards extra points for banking one off a deer.
