Last week continued the 2025 trend of hotness. It wasn't as hot as the week before, but was balmy enough to make the descriptor "cooler" feel wrong. About 13 weeks ago, the northwoods was coated in ice and downed trees. We've come a long way since the Great Ice Storm of '25.

There was sun, but last week had its share of clouds. And rain. The north end of Lucerne got about an inch for the week. The lake level has risen half a foot during the month of June. Historically, it starts to go down in July, but it'll need lighter rains for that to happen this year.

Last week, there were two ski shows. Both were well attended. The first had flat water.

The one with flat water had better pyramidship. The other one had better faceplants. No one got hurt, so both were good.

In between the ski shows there were parades. The one down main street in Crandon was well attended and beat the storms by two hours.

The parade on Lucerne was buoyant and a mile long.

The amounts of cleverness and glitter some of the ships of the line displayed amazed all the shore people.

A third parade, one principally made up of dump trucks and assorted heavy equipment, has been going on for over a month now. Many want their highway 8 back, but none so much as those that live on previously sleepy roads that have become detours.

A few eagles were hunting (fishing mostly) up the north end of the lake all week.

The milkweed on the side of the busy detour known as Potawatomi Trail have a monarch caterpillar infestation. Maybe the word "infestation" is a little strong. We only saw one, but that's one more than we've ever seen before.

By the weekend, the lake temperature was close to 76°F and, as always, a great escape from the heat.

Under all that water, the fish are active.

The lake level is 26 inches above the nail. That's 11 inches short of the record of 36 inches set back on August 1st 2020. It'd take 2 or three big storms hitting in close succession to get to a new high water mark. It's unlikely that we'll see a new record this year, but you never know. If we don't get a parade of rain, that's fine. In addition to the 4th of July parades last week, we have a parade of ski shows through the end of the month. We'll be there every Monday and Wednesday to take pictures and, when the weather permits, to drone tiny holes in the sky above the shows.<br><br><br>-Nemo likes his lake swimmable and local road construction finished.
