Summer's Start/End

Next »

May 12th through 18th, 2025

Last week started on a Summery note. Some would more accurately say it started with a summery cacophony. The air was in the high 70s°F much of the week with Monday topping at 84°F. The sun was tanning us nicely. Golf was enjoyed without mittens. Then there was the major discordant note of the lake temperature. It started the week in the upper 40s°F. With the weather screaming "Summer!" in one ear and the lake shouting back "Traumatizing Cold!" in the other, the week was horrendously wonderful. The extra warm air at the start of the week coaxed the last remaining patches of tardy trillium to explode. The trees on the hills around the lake were also starting to detonate in spring greenyness. Early in the week, the lake would chop up a little in the late afternoons. Later in the week, the wind shifted to the south. The north end got super lumpy. The lake was ultra flat on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The Wednesday morning flat had better cloud reflections in it. All the flat remained untouched by ski or foot. Few boats were in and the water still held a dry suit style cold. The water hazards at the NCC were also pretty flat and the lack of rain has pushed them back from the fairways. Clouds and promised rain came to Lucerne Mid-week. Parts of the state got pummeled. Lake Lucerne, not so much. The meager amounts of rain did green up lawns some. The NCC's green was augmented by its sprinkler system. The golf course's mostly flat water hazards are starting to green up, too. Except for all the golf balls. They're mostly white. The NCC coolers continue to be filled with cold, quality beer. Over the years, I've taken no small amount of abuse defending the virtures of Hamm's, but I will not relent. It continues to have the liquid nature and yellowness men demand in their beer. That, and those old little commercials, with their cartoon bears. During much of the week, flying critters around the lake were proving the adage "you are what you eat". Local squirrels were out and active last week. We're not sure if they were being generally evil or plotting revenge for some shameful games of squirrel ball. Sunday's temperature topped out at 47°F. There might have been frost this morning. The Summer of '25 was green, mostly flat, and short. I'm not sure why the summer was so truncated, but I'm pretty sure there was a squirrel involved. Looking back on the season, there should have been more skiing, footing, and a 4th of July. Maybe next year.

-Nemo's pulling in piers and predicting ice-in.
