Last week had clouds, wind, and warm, but most of all, last week had rain. It had big overnight rain. It had all day misty type rain. It had forecast rain and surprise rain. The <a href='/LakeLevel/LL2.html' class ='defaultlink2' target='_blank'>lake level</a> is going up. Without counting any watershed contribution, the lake was up 3 inches for the week. In a related story, the fire danger is low. If the sun set just as the clouds were retreating or moving in, where was a noteable sunset. Most of the time the clouds were too thick and threatening to create a colorfully good sunset. As a direct consequence of all the rain, lawn puddles are back. They're getting deep enough to cover even the most uncut grass. The 2024 trillium season is coming to an end. More than one bloom is getting its purple on. All the rain has produced a bumper crop of hummingbird. They are getting as thick as the clouds of mosquitoes. The rain has also had a positive effect on the number of cardinals on the north end of Lucerne. The storms of last week have produced the earliest batches of canadian geese we have ever witnessed. The fishing was good enough on the north end to forestall any talon/gosling interactions. Sadly, no talon/squirrel interactions were observed near the bar. The rising lake has given some pier owners heartburn and, when the waves are up, wet feet. There were enough holes in the rain for many to put boats in and get some of the first ski runs of the year. In addition to pre-wetting skiers, the wet weather is making lawns especially happy. In the evening, if you can turn off all the squirrel noise and frog song, you can hear the grass growing. We were fortunate that one of the few times the rain stopped dovetailed with a lawn puddle low tide allowing us enough time to mow before the next batch of storms rolled in. We are not sure how much longer this spring's undrought will shrink beaches, dampen ski runs, and ruin picnics. Historically, undroughts only last for a few months before returning to a sunnier, drier, more tourist friendly state. Until then, if you're coming up to the northwoods anytime soon, bring plenty of boardgames, a few decks of cards, and don't forget your PFD.<br><br><br>-Nemo prefers talon/squirrel interactions to talon/gosling ones.
