Binary Spring
May 13th through 19th

The cool water of Lake Lucerne was flat and unskied all week. Boat lifts and piers are slowly making their way into the lake, but most are still on the shore.

Trillium season has been pushed back by the brutal Winter. They were just starting to flower late last week. Memorial Day should coincide with peak trillium this year.

Otter! We've been told that they have been spotted in the lake on occasion but we filed such stories with Hodag and Lessie (the Lake Lucerne Monster) tales. After we witnessed this guy playing and fishing on the North end of the lake, the otter file has since been moved to the same location as the loon and duck files.

There is talk of moving the fish file to the Hodag folder. There used to be fish in the lake, but we have not seen a one so far this year.

The ice is still out, but it was a close thing. It's been cool and dry after an inch of rain last Monday. It got down right cold late in the week with near record lows on Thursday and Friday. Twenty four degrees Fahrenheit on both mornings indicated that Winter was not going to give up the seasonal throne. There was talk of regicide plots by local gardeners and skiers to get the Winter monarch gone. Then suddenly, on Friday at noon, the frosty king croaked of natural causes. It got warm. Forecasts no longer see highs in the forties and lows well below freezing. Yay! The lake is up for the week. It is currently at -25.5 inches wrt the nail. Up over an inch from last week. The lake temperature fell back to 48℉. That's a bit cool for my likein'. It's been dry since last Monday and the fire danger is currently posted as HIGH at the ranger station in Laona. Rain is predicted in a day or so. That should knock down the fire danger to LOW and continue to push the lake up.
