Easter Weekend April 6th through 8th
When we parked on the noth end of the lake late Friday, there were clouds covering the sky, ice on the roof, and a chill in the air. It was about 20 degrees under the average temperature.
Part of the lake surface is liquid. Most is still solid.
As we went to the Crandon post office, which opens at 9:30 AM on Saturday (so if you get there at 9:26 AM you will have to burn 4 minutes in the lobby taking in the sites), it began to snow. The blowing flurries did not accumulate much during the day.
On the way back to the lake I was dragged into "Trisha's Treasures" on Main street. They have wind chimes. Meg was happy leaving with some wooden eggs. I was just happy to leave.
Despite the unusually cold weather, the trained observer can identify some sure signs of spring. There's the thawing of the edges of the lake and some of the checkers at Schaeffer's have put on the blue bunny ears.
Back at the lake, a canoe was launched and the open water explored.
The rocks on the shore all had an ice skirt.
The open water was very clear and extremely cold.
Last weekend the webcam, not anticipating any congressional idiocy, adjusted itself for daylight savings time. After the always wonderful Easter Vigil mass at St. Leonard's, its clock was reset.
The south end of the lake is open. We did not see anyone skiing behind the islands.
The construction at Timber Shore's seems to be at a standstill.
The only change we noticed was the addition of a blue van to the site.
The ice sheet covering much of the lake is about 5 inches thick. If the weather warms up, it'll be gone in a week. If it ever warms up. The lake level seems to be going up. The nail pier will be lowered just after the ice leaves to give a more quantified assessment of the water level.
