Vacation #2

July 24th through August 3rd, 2003

Lake Lucerne
The start of the week had the winds coming from the south. This means warmer but rough water on the north side of the lake. The sailing is generally great with these conditions but skiing and fishing is more difficult.
Lake Lucerne
That is not to say we had tumultuous seas for the whole week. Dive 4 and Dive 5 were done during calm days. Dive 2 turned out to be more interesting (exciting, terrifying) due to weather.
Lake Lucerne
Calm water brings out the skiers (sane) and footers (insane). I really like to watch the footers for the same reason many watch NASCAR, the crashes are habitually entertaining.
Lake Lucerne
Skiers crash too, but the lower speeds makes them less frequent and not as brutal.
Lake Lucerne
On Saturday we took a break from the lake to attend a few events taking place in the area. Part of the Crandon "Kentuck Days" was an auto show.
Lake Lucerne
The cars entered were very impressive.
Lake Lucerne
Our favorite was this red one.
Lake Lucerne
Few new cars are this clean under the hood.
Lake Lucerne
The food at the festival was great and the kids seemed to really enjoy the tank.
Lake Lucerne
We had to hurry back to make sure we didn't miss...
Lake Lucerne
The Lake Lucerne Advancement Association's Family Fun Day!
Lake Lucerne
We knew there was quite a crowd at Fun Day by the large amount of cars parked for the event.
Lake Lucerne
There was food (no corn though!), auctions and games.
Lake Lucerne
We watched a free throw game for the kids for a while.
Lake Lucerne
After a few hours, all the events started to take their toll and we wearily trudged back to the lake.
Lake Lucerne
The only other non-competition event we appeared at that week was the lightly attended "Nailfest". The traditional food of Nailfest (kielbasa and onions cooked on 8 inch barn nails) proved quite tasty. Speculation on the low turnout was blamed on the weather and lack of interest in the nail. I feel it was sparsely peopled due to the spontaneity of the happening and the lateness of the hour.
Lake Lucerne
On Sunday and Thursday the Hodag ski show is held in Rhinelander. On the way there Sunday, some high clouds produced a "glory".
Lake Lucerne
The show was pretty good..
Lake Lucerne
Rain dominated the middle and end of the week. The lake went up 1.5 inches during this time.
Lake Lucerne
We beat the post Labor day rush and decorated a pine tree on Meg's Meadow. Only 136 shopping days till Christmas!
Lake Lucerne
The Rafto championship was held during a steady rain. Mr. Tapper won in a close game.
Lake Lucerne
The War Quarters Championship of the World had it all. Tension, spills, and lots of pouring. Mr. Tapper won in the championship round 30 to 20.
Lake Lucerne
A delightful beermid was created after the game as a tribute to all those brave men and women who chose to participate and lost badly.
Lake Lucerne
By the time the rain ended work called. We'll be back in 3 weeks.
