Boats in Weekend

May 15th through 19th, 2003

Lake Lucerne
We made it to the north shore of the lake late Thursday evening. It was calm, clear and a little cold.
Lake Lucerne
The moon rose above the east shore at about 9:00 PM. We watched the best lunar eclipse in the past 3 years from our dock.
Lake Lucerne
The eclipse started shortly after 9 PM with the moon entering the shadow of the earth.
Lake Lucerne
In about 45 minutes almost half the moon was in shadow. At about this time some loons on the lake started to get really noisy.
Lake Lucerne
By 10:15 PM most of the moon was gone. More stars were visible while the moon was obscured. The moon was back to full about 90 minutes later.
Lake Lucerne
More clouds came in on Friday to begin a trend for the weekend. On Monday there was no blue patches at all and heavy rain after sunset.
Lake Lucerne
When we arrived on Thursday the trillium were just starting to emerge. By Monday the edges of the woods were covered with them.
Lake Lucerne
Late Friday we took a paddleboat from the north shore to RP's place which turns out to be farther down the west shore than we first thought.
Lake Lucerne
Mrs. Nemo caught a +12" smallmouth on the way. It gave her quite a battle on the ultralite rod she was using.
Lake Lucerne
A loon on the northwest corner of the lake was also fishing on Friday.
Lake Lucerne
The lake is at 16 inches above the nail. Many people we talked to feel it won't get much higher due to the outflow of swamp creek.

The cable on the skiboat lift was replaced. It might not seem like that big a deal to most people but it was the greatest engineering feat of the weekend. The rain gauge was not added to the weather station on Monday due to rain. This should now serve as the definition of irony.
Lake Lucerne
As the final campfire died down we all agreed that the water is still to cold to do much (53°F). Only the hardiest of souls skied on Saturday and when they fell their screams echoed off the hills.
