April 18th through 19th, 2003

When we arrived we found the ice pulling away from the shore. The remains of the ice storm that hit the area a few days before were still evident. In addition to ice covered branches there were plenty of downed power lines and trees. We had power but if you listen carefully at night you could hear the gentle sound of portable generators. It warmed up on Saturday and the ice was well on its way to being gone before sundown (not that we saw the sun at all that day). Mr. Tapper wore a wetsuit and a safety line to get out on the ice and check the thickness. We were surprised to find 12 inches of very good ice. Even the edge of the ice was good enough to walk on. I still think that ice-out is only about a week away. The pier with the nail was lowered and the first lake level measurement of the year was taken. The last thing we did was measure the lake level. 11.5 inches above the nail is the highest level for at least the last 2 years.

-Nemo
