One of the first things we did is measure the ice. There is 20 inches of very good ice out on the lake but less near the shore (more on that later).
The old ice measurement holes have not froze over and are expanding.
The ice on the sides of the old hole is also 20 inches thick.
The sap was running very well. The auxilary cooker was called into service to keep up with the trees.
The warmer temperatures (50+°F) melted the snow from last week and streams of water poured out of the woods.
The side of the road on the north end of the lake was washed away.
The side of the road was then deposited in the middle of the road downstream.
The sky was clear on Friday night and the waxing moon washed out most of the stars.
The ice near the shore is less than an inch thick. The hole off the right side of the pier is where I fell through.
On Saturday the "Second Annual Forest County Maple Syrup Festival" was held at the high school.
The trophies from this year were not won by anyone I know.
The gym was transformed into a market place for all kinds of goods...
There was maple syrup..
quilts...
sock monkeys, and other stuff.
We already had maple syrup and a few quilts.
We'll be back Friday to measure the ice and get the webcams more stable (I'm afraid it will take a DSL connection to do that though).
