The Week of the Bear Storm.

In a normal year the trillium are more of a memory than a flower by June. This year, due in no small part to the slow onset of Spring, they're still around. The fiddleheads and friends have almost finished their fractal dance and full fern is just days away. That last sentence was brought to you by the letter "F". After last year's logging accident things looked grim. It took months of fiberglass, paint and rehab but Larry the Logroller is back. All 22 feet 4 inches of 'im. A huge Pileated woodpecker has been hanging around the north end of the lake. On occasion it munches on a hunk of suet in a cage we put out for it. On a sunny morning late last week, a local bear decided that crude protein is a good part of a nutritious breakfast. The cage got all bruined up. The storm came from the south. Here you can see the south end of the lake bring replaced by a sheet of white wind, rain and rage. Sixty seconds later the storm wall was only about 100 yards away. A minute after that, the north end of the lake became very bad for skiing. Fishing would have been challenging too. After a few minutes our paddle boat began to be swept off its lift. Would it manage to hold on until the quick moving storm passed? No. Mosty all of the neighbors pier remainded intact. Mostly. After less than an hour all that was left of the storm were large trees on the ground along with some snapped service poles. Power is still out in some places. We had on and off rain after the storm for almost 2 days. Not counting the flow from the watershed, an additional 1.2 inches of depth was added to the lake The lake level is at 32.75 inches below the nail. Up over twelve inches from ice-in and nine inches from last September. Lake Lucerne continues to get deeper! It's got a ways to go but the change is in the right direction. Huzzah! More rain is forecast by the middle of next week. That'll help. The local, suet eating bear has also been raiding bird feeders up and down Knott Lane. It's also been said to have bruined up a garbage can or two. I'm told that more people around the lake will discourage Yogi's visits. As Spring flows into Summer and visitors flow into the northwoods, we should be seeing less and less of it. At least that's the hope.<br><br><br>-Nemo, not a fan of squirrels either.
