First Week of Summer

Next »

June 19th through 27th, 2009

There were many times during May and June that I thought the seasons this year would go from Spring to Fall, giving Summer a clean miss. Summer was late this year. On June 19th, Summer crashed through the cabin door, grabbed a cold beer, and made itself at home. Everyday last week was hot, still, and past due. Animals were everywhere. In addition to all the damn bugs, there was an eagle hunting the north end of the lake all week, and a suicidal skunk that did an impromptu interpretation of Pamplona's "Running with the Bulls" with the Saturn as the bulls and the skunk as the slow guy that gets gored (The tires played the role of the horns (the role of the blood was played by skunk smell (and it continued on the stage long after the recreation was over))). We purchased and moved the phone booth back to the Bar. Much time was spent giving knees, arms, and spines the pounding that only a flat lake and tow rope can deliver. I'm hoping to walk without too much pain by next weekend to do it all again. The ski show at Water's Edge on Wednesday was one of the better ones I've seen. I really like the boat. It's like synchronized swimming for machines The water is very clear, as it always is on Lucerne.. The springs seem active. Nothing is as refreshing as swimming along in a 75°F lake and hitting a 60°F welling up of water. On Saturday morning (6/27) the lake got 0.2 inches of rain. It's a start but we need much, much more. It looks like this summer, in addition to being tardy, may have had a false start. The high temperature today (6/30) is predicted to be a damp 53°F. Forecasters are calling for highs in the upper 70s°F for the 4th of July weekend. That's better, but not the wonderfully calm and sunny 80s°F and 90s°F we were blessed with everyday last week.

-Nemo
